What's New With Hugh
July 14 - August 13, 2003
13 August 2003
Breaking the Code
Dirk Pitt may have slipped through his fingers, but is another hero
of popular fiction on Hugh's horizon? Novelist Dan Brown tells the
New England Seacost
News that Hugh would be his top choice to portray protagonist
Robert Langdon in an adaptation of his best-seller The Da Vinci
Code, the rights to which were recently purchased by Sony. A
script is in development.
[Thanks, Lisa!]
Catching Up with Gollum
Smeagol himself, Andy Serkis, is a co-star in Standing Room Only,
and over at his official
website, pal Hugh turns up in the photos taken at Comic-Con.
Southpaws Unite!
And to think, it was discouraged by "proper" folk at one
time: Hugh is just one of a large community of famous left-handed
folk. Check out the honor roll courtesy of Canada.com!

More of the Boy working the queue...
Manhattan's NY1
cable network has video footage of Hugh greeting fans last week,
as well - follow the link to watch!
[Thanks, Daisy!]
Double the mutants for your dollar!
Although we can't imagine anyone who reads this site with any regularity
doesn't already have their copy of X-Men 1.5 on DVD - in
case anyone's interested, that disc set will be packaged along with
X2 when the sequel is released in November as The X-Men
Collection. Coming
Soon has a sneak peek at the artwork!

Music to our eyes and ears: Seems a certain croonin' curly-headed
cowboy (say that ten times fast!) is coming to a living room near
you. Yeppers, folks, OKLAHOMA! hits the streets October 14th, in
region 1 format, retailing for $24.99. Those living in the US and
Canada will finally be able to enjoy Hugh's amazing performance
in this classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical. The site doesn't
have a complete list of DVD contents, but you can read a bit more
here
(enter OKLAHOMA! in the keyword search box.) and at
Playbill.com.
[Thanks, Jenda and Jenn!]
Good Buzz: "People are sick
of these big, bloated, empty blockbusters," he said, adding
that "smarter" movies, such as the horror movie Van Helsing,
which stars Australian trio Hugh Jackman, Richard Roxburgh and David
Wenham, may up the quality next year. Isn't it good to
know VH is generating two thumbs-up this far in advance? Read
the full article. Click

Video Alert! - ET on repeat...
Missed Hugh greeting fans at the BFO box office on Entertainment
Tonight? You can catch bits of the segment right here: For hi-bandwidth
(cable-DSL) and lo-bandwidth
(dial-up), respectively.
[Thanks, Mel!]
Gallery Update: New additions include another fantastic fan
art portrait, this one of Hugh as Curly in Oklahoma, in the Fan
Art gallery; two hi-res stunners in Magazines
& Portraits; and one of our favorite pictures of Hugh and the
missus yet in Deb & Others.
[Many thanks to Patsie & Lucia!]
And that's another week in the can - see you Monday, folks!
7 August 2003
The Boy from Oz makes bank!
Well, it seems Hugh is off to a great start on Broadway. First day
of sales, according to
news.co.au amounted to $230,000 (AUD we're assuming)!! Wow!
Pat yourselves on the back for that little feat!
[Thanks, Annie]
Second time around
Did you miss Hugh's appearance on ET the other day? Never fear,
ET has it up on their web site. But
better grab it quick! Never know when it might *poof* disappear!
[Thanks, Tammy and Ing!]
6 August 2003
Somebody better ask Wolvie to carve...
Just in time for Thanksgiving - after you stuff yourself on turkey,
loosen that belt buckle and hit the couch to overdose on mutant
mayhem: X2 is to be released on Region 1 DVD and NTSC video
on November 25th. You can pre-order the disc now at Amazon; details
of the extra features are still forthcoming, and we'll add the item
to our Charity Bazaar later this week.
UPDATE: OK, it now appears that
Amazon has removed the release date and the pre-order option. Getting
ahead of themselves apparently. Sorry about that, folks; we'll keep
watching this until they resolve it.
[Thanks to the Hype!!]
Well hellooo, dancing boy!
Prepare yourselves before popping your head into the Boy
From Oz gallery today, and make sure your resolution is
set to "enormous"; we've got a gorgeous scan of the photo
currently up on the Imperial Theater marquee!
[Many, many thanks Joe!]
US
TV ALERT: "Shirtless: Hollywood's Sexiest Men", in
which Hugh is featured, will repeat on AMC on the morning of August
19th. Check listings for air times.
[Thanks, Alaina!]
5 August 2003
GALLERY
UPDATE!: We've got excellent pics from yesterday's BFO ticket
sale appearance in Miscellaneous as
well as the Fan Photos section (scroll
down to the second row of Maya's photos!). Plus, more spectacular
fan art, this time of Hugh as Stanley in Swordfish and Leopold
in Kate & Leopold has been posted in the Fan
Art gallery.
[Patsie, Maya and Lucia - thanks for sharing!]
Battle of the Bods!
Even across the pond at Empire
magazine they're reporting on E!'s best bodies in showbiz poll,
in which Hugh came in fifth overall. (But three of the top five
were women, so as far as the blokes go he came in second behind
Brad Pitt!)
Need a pad in Blighty?
You can pick one up from Hugh for a cool £1.5 million;
according to the Sunday Times of London, he and Deb have
put their two-bedroom flat in the Pimlico district on the market.
4 August 2003
FOURTH UPDATE:
Boy, it's a good thing we've got some free time on our
hands today! Photos from Hugh's signing appearance this morning
are now available on Broadway.com!
THIRD
UPDATE: For New York City readers: add WB11, NY-1 and
Blink 102.7 FM to the appearences Hugh will be making tonight and
tomorrow morning. Watch/listen to your local broadcasts!
[Thanks so much, Joe!]
SECOND
UPDATE: TV Alert!: Tune in tonight to Entertainment
Tonight and Access Hollywood (syndicated; check listings
for time and channel) and E! News Live (6 p.m. EST/PST) for
footage of Hugh signing for fans at the opening of the Boy From
Oz box office in NY this morning! Also, photos taken by a few
lucky JL readers are forthcoming - stay tuned!
[Thanks for the alert, Mel & Karen!]
The Envelope Please...Congrats to four special
folks who hold Ph.D.'s in Wolvie-trivia: Janet, Marzena, Miki
and "Notmanos." Each will be receiving a JL prize
package containing mags and photos of you-know who. Thanks to all
who entered and a very special hug to Mel for creating the quiz.
This has been such fun, we'll simply have to do it again!
"If You Ask Me"...They did and she
dishes. Join writer, Libby Gelman-Waxner, as she considers the attributes
of X-Men in Premiere (on newsstands now):
“…Still, trying to decide between the Democrats and the Republicans
is so sad that I think most Americans prefer to swear allegiance
to either the X-Men or The Matrix movies. Personally,
I went for X2: X-Men United, the recent sequel, which introduced
not only plenty of punctuation marks in the title alone, but also
a whole new batch of mutants with superpowers. These mutants
can do things like telekinetically start fires or shapeshift, and
most of them are also young and gorgeous, but they’re still treated
like outcasts, as if the ability to control the weather or crawl
across the ceiling was the same as a lisp or a weight problem…”
“…All of my old favorites from the first X-Men movie are
back, especially Hugh Jackman as the unbearably hunky Wolverine,
who sprouts metal talons and can heal himself. ‘Hugh Jackman
doesn’t really need a superpower,’ Andrew pointed out. ‘When
the other mutants say “I can kill someone by touching them” or “I
can read minds through an iron wall,” Wolverine should just say
“I can wear a tank top.” ‘ ”…I think I love the X-Men because
all of the mutants are anguished, sexy, and yearning, and because
they’re always being led by either Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellen;
it’s like a kinky Hogwarts…”
[Thanks to the ever awesome, Mel!]
1 August 2003
Look, Ma! It Unzips!!
Designs for the new X-Men action figures have been released, and
get a gander at
this guy!! Not only does that zipper look functional, but there
are two sets of interchangeable hands. With and without the claws.
*Snikt!*
[Many, many days would it take to thank you Nic]
Tell it like it is Liz
In Liz Smith's July 31st Column: "CAROLE BAYER SAGER - composer
and Joan Collins/Elizabeth Taylor look-a-like - arrives in New York
any second. She'll be taking a look at what's happening with "The
Boy From Oz." This is the $11-million musical, produced by Robert
Fox, about the late composer Peter Allen, which opens in October.
"Oz" features a dozen Allen-Bayer Sager tunes. (Hugh Jackman is
Peter, which must be making the ghost of the talented Australian,
who died too young, spin with pleasure in heaven.)"
[Thanks, Mel and Karen!]
That's it from this corner of the world! Have a great weekend everyone!
31 July 2003
So, what are you doing Aug 4th?
25 lucky ticket purchasers will walk away from the ticket booth
with more then their tickets for the forthcoming Boy From Oz show.
Playbill.com
announced that Hugh himself would be on hand the morning of Aug
4th to sign autographs on BFO posters for the first 25 ticket buyers
at the Imperial Theatre box office. The box office opens at 10 am,
so if you're planning on taking advantage of this fantastic opportunity,
be prepared to get there early. For those of you still wondering,
the Imperial is located at 249 West 45 Street. Good luck!!
30 July 2003
Tall, dark and...deadly?
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and the L.A.
Daily News, Hugh is among the names are being bandied about
as possible candidates to play the "dashing, deranged assassin"
John Wilkes Booth in Manhunt. The film, based on the soon
to be released novel, chronicles the escape of Abraham Lincoln's
killer and the subsequent 12-day search to apprehend him. Other
names mentioned include Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Stuart Townsend
and Hugh's Van Helsing co-star, Will Kemp. Stay tuned...
29 July 2003
Another sit-down with the wonderful Mrs. Jackman
And this time it's the Sunday
Telegraph with a word, or several, from Deborra -Lee on
her directing career, motherhood and more. Now if you'll excuse
us, we're off to write out that wish list!... (You'll see what we
mean. *g*)
From someone who should know!
This very cool letter appears in the current Entertainment
Weekly, in response to the Hot Issue cover with Hugh:
"I'm working on Hugh Jackman's new project Van Helsing as a
stand-in, and his generosity and kindness to not only myself but
the whole crew is such an inspiration for all of those who aspire
to one day be where he is. He is one of those rare exceptions of
stars who actually live up to their PR hype." Dominic
Pace...Los Angeles
[Thanks, Lisa!]
X2 DVD update: A sleuthy reader wrote
in to tell us that her local Hollywood Video has a release date
of November 24th for X2 as well. (That'd be Region 1, folks!)
Still waiting on the official announcement from Fox.
[Thanks much, Dawn!]
28 July 2003
A woman with priorities: "I'd like
to look at scripts when Hugh finishes on Broadway (in Boy from
Oz), but being mum is the most important role." Writer
Chris Beck shares more about Hugh's wonderful lady in From
the Shadow of Wolverine.
Two thumbs-up" Liza, Peter Allen's ex,
has given Hugh her seal of approval to play the late, great
Peter Allen. For those interested in a NY Theater deal, the
Tennessean/Travel New York Theater Flight has been slated for late
October. Natch, BFO is part of this
exclusive package.
[Thanks, Linda and Paula!]
Hugh-Lovely Blog Gallery: Take a gander
at some additional
snaps from the recent ComicCon event. These are absolute beauties,
folks. Photography buffs might enjoy reading technical
details --could be helpful next time you want to try your hand
at capturing an event.
[Much obliged, Emese (for your talent) and Lisa (for the heads-up)!]
25 July 2003
Comic-Con just keeps on truckin'
And six days later, we're still getting good copy. This time, scooper
extraordinare - and pal of JL - David Server over at Countingdown.com
has posted his summary of several panels, including Van Helsing
in great detail and with clever commentary. (Well, he didn't get
that body playing ping-pong, Dave. *g*)
[Thanks much to Dave and the whole CD crew!]
Sing it loooouuuuddd!
So says Cindy Adams in the New York Post:. . . "Hugh
Jackman is working with record producer Phil Ramone and hopes one
day to tour the U.S. in a one-man music show . . ." Hmm, no
time soon we take it.
[Thanks, Lisa!]
The disc everyone's talking about
Some international dates are surfacing for various Region 2 editions
of X2 on DVD; The R2 Project
reports that Fox has announced a November 24th release date.
Meanwhile, one of our readers reports that Belgium will see a disc
on October 22nd. No Region 1 news sites have reported the announcement
yet, but we'll keep you posted
[Thanks, Evi and Nic!]
TV
REMINDER & GALLERY UPDATE - Don't forget to tune in to BBC
America in the US for Hugh's appearance on Parkinson
tonight! (Check local listings for airtime; it will repeat in the
early morning on August 3). Also, we've added several great pics
from this week's rehearsal photo call in the Boy
From Oz gallery.
[Thanks, Char!]
Have a fantastic weekend, everyone - see you Monday!
24 July 2003
Oh
to be in England: Deborra-lee's directorial debut, Standing
Room Only, receives its UK television premiere on Sky Movies
Premiere, Sunday, September 14th at 10pm-- immediately following
the premiere of Kate and Leopold! As if that lineup wasn't
a slice of heaven, Deb's film will be followed by Animal Attraction,
Someone Like You's UK moniker. Hugh Fest is set to begin at
8pm; as always, be sure to check local listings.
[Thanks awfully, Sam! You're a peach!]
Deb's in the limelight: "Hugh's
doing his work . . . and I am playing mum and doing my own creative
stuff. It doesn't affect us, but it seems to affect everyone else,"
Furness notes in a recent SRO article, Film
Wives Step Forward. [Thanks, Krin!]
James Bond = Hugh Jackman? It will if
fans have their way! With rumors continuing that the able Pierce
Brosnan's Bond days are numbered, fans have spoken.
Ten guesses as to who came in number
one.
[Thanks, Shannon!]
23 July 2003
The
time-honored art of snarling at old ladies...
Hugh mugs it up in Standing Room Only, which Deb appeared
on Rove Live in Australia to promote recently. (The film
screens this weekend at Melbourne). We've now got more screen caps
from the film so we've created an SRO
page in the Film, Stage & TV
gallery; also, the captures from the recent Extra segment
have been moved to this page. Still working on confirming any TV
dates...
[Excellent work, nug!]
ComicCon, take three: The gang at CHUD have joined the chorus
with their take on the Van
Helsing preview footage; also, The Movie Box have added
photos of both arrivals
and captures of the Van
Helsing
panel, including nearly the whole cast.
[Thanks Char!]
22 July 2003
The Boy From Oz is on his way!
Run straight over to Broadway.com
for a glimpse of Hugh, Stephanie Block, Isabel Keating and the cast
of The Boy From Oz on their first day of rehearsals in New
York!
[Thank you, Kathy and Linda!]
More ComicCon updates: We've got a few more great pictures in
the Miscellaneous gallery. AICN
has updated w/ their reporter Quint's reaction to the Van Helsing
panel, including a picture of Hugh, Kate Beckinsale and Richard
Roxburgh. Also on the X3 front - Hugh clarified at the con
that he is not contracted for the second sequel yet. But he is signed
for two more Van Helsing installments. Meanwhile, The
Movie Box has video footage of Hugh singing at the con! Cheeky
monkey.
[Thanks Kelli, Mel, Naif and Junkyard!]
X2 DVD news: The
Digital Bits has updated w/ art for the Japanese Region 2 version
of X2; no word on whether this will match the R1 artwork,
but it's possible.
[Thanks to the Hype!]
Demon barber days?
Playbill
and Zap2It
write that Hugh has emerged as a "fan favorite" for the
lead in the Sweeney Todd motion picture (He's on the young
side - Len Cariou was 40 when he originated the role on Broadway.
But Hugh's musical talent and the fact that folks are itching to
see him sing on the big screen are heavy factors, no doubt!) Academy
Award-winning film and stage director Sam Mendes has signed on to
direct, which is excellent news.
[Thanks Sarah!]
Introducing the Fan Art gallery!
And major kudos to our friend Lucia in Brazil, whose amazing talents
have spurred us to create a page for fan artwork in the gallery
where we had none before. Go to the new
page and take a look at her lovely pencil drawings, we're sure
you'll be as awed as we were!
[Thanks again, Lucia!]
21 July 2003
Third Update: COMIC
CON PICS! You want 'em? You got
'em - go over to Miscellaneous in the
gallery right now to see 'em! (Wow, it's amazing Hugh and Kate Beckinsale
didn't break the camera with their combined beauty...)
[Patsie, there are
NO words. You are a godsend!]
Second Update: Good old reliable Garth
- over at Dark Horizons
right NOW you can read the first summary of the footage of Van
Helsing shown at the con on Saturday. (*gasp* Loincloth? Oh,
my...)
Also,
TV ALERT! U.S. readers, heads up - both the syndicated shows
Extra and Access Hollywood indicated they would have
some footage from ComicCon on tonight's episodes. Check listings
for network and airtime!
[Thanks, Mel!]
Hungry for more Wolverine? As usual,
one source sometimes says one thing that conflicts with another,
but we all know given the financial success of X2 [over$200 million
domestic], X3's a sure thing! In fact, our Colorado newspaper ran
an article noting X2 is considered the ONLY successful sequel
this season. Kudos to Bryan, cast and crew! Hugh and Halle
were chatting up the next installment over the weekend at ComicCon.
Although Bryan
Singer hasn't signed to direct X3, he's written the treatment
upon which a script will be created -- happily, the treatment's
more Wolvie-based than X2! Music to our ears!
[Thanks to able scoopers Nic, Superherohype.com and Zap2it.com!]
Speaking of ComicCon...We're on the prowl
for additional news and will update with pics as soon as we have
them! If you were there and saw Hugh, let us know what you thought!
11 days and counting...That's right, the X-Men
trivia contest will end on July 31st! Enter for a chance to win
mags and clippings!
18 July 2003
Van Helsing footage at ComicCon
Yup, you heard it right. VH producer, Bob Ducsay, rushed clips of
the movie so that he could wow the crowed at ComicCon (which started
today and will run through Sunday). The presentation will be on
Saturday.
[All props go to Comingsoon.net]
Gallery Update: New picture of Hugh and Da Ahnald in the
Deb and Others section.
That's it for this week! To all our friends going to ComicCon, have
a ball!
17 July 2003
Bring on the Jackman!
Countingdown.com's
Van Helsing page is running a little poll about the most anticipated
feature of the upcoming monster movie. For a kick, stroll on over
and check it out!
[Thanks, Mel!]
The best thing, is Hugh
Curious about the back story of The Boy from Oz? Well then,
check out this interesting little piece on Broadway.com's
website. It's nice to hear they feel so strongly about Hugh playing
the lead. Bodes well for his Broadway debut!
[Great catch Lynn!]
When come back, bring metrosexual
Hugh, according to The
Guardian, is a metrosexual man. What, one might ask, is
a metrosexual man? Well, "A metrosexual, according to New York's
finest marketing men, is 'a guy who is definitely straight, but
has embraced the worlds of grooming facials, shopping with women
and ... their feminine side'." Really. Now, that's interesting.
Check out the link for the rest of the story.
[Go Nic.. it's your birthday! Well, actually that was yesterday.
We were going to sing, but... Hope it was happy!]
16 July 2003
From the news desk - in brief!
No, not in briefs, you silly ones. ;-) Just a couple of minor
mentions in the news - first, this article on award winning Broadway
costume designer William
Ivey Long features a potential sneak peek at Hugh's flamboyant
wardrobe in The Boy From Oz (see the last photo, at right).
Meanwhile, the Ventura
County Star features the toy company who has been contracted
to work on Van Helsing merchandising. (Action figures - woohoo!!!)
15 July 2003
Want the bash? Need the cash.
Of course, it's well worth it for such a fabulous cause! The
Actors' Fund auction is now open! - if you're in the bidding
mood (and how!), go now for your chance to bid on opening night
tickets for The Boy From Oz and a pass to the after party.
[Thanks Anniekins, Linda, and 'c!]
Southern hospitality?!
Last minute reshoots, or maybe a change of scene? According to the
Post-Searchlight
in Bainbridge, GA, the Van Helsing crew was recently scouting
the Southern region (swipe text for possible SPOILERS): for
a pine forest road on which to shoot a big climactic carriage chase.
Boy, it's not done till it's done, is it?
Gallery Update: Three more stunners from
an older photo session in the Magazines
& Portraits gallery.
[Patsie, you're a marvel!]
14 July 2003

Jackman, Joanna
Lumley, Sophie Dahl, Michael Gambon and Mary-Elizabeth Mastrantonio)

[Awesome find, Nic! And, Deb--best of luck from the JL
gang!]
Drool-worthy: Based on this
article, it's highly likely Hugh recently recorded a pre-Boy
from Oz CD of Peter Allen songs. When, where, and IF it
will be released prior to Hugh's Broadway debut is anyone's guess,
but isn't the anticipation delicious?
[Thanks for making our Monday, Lisa!]
